Nansana Municipality Distributes Primary Science Kits to 20 Schools to Strengthen Practical Learning

Nansana Municipality has distributed primary school science kits to 20 selected schools in the municipality, marking a significant step toward strengthening practical science education and improving learners’ understanding of scientific concepts.

The distribution exercise, held today, brought together key education and local government stakeholders, including the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (D/RDC) in charge of Nansana Municipality, His Worship the Mayor of Nansana Municipality, John Bosco Sserunkuuma, the Deputy Town Clerk, education officials, school representatives and other stakeholders.

The initiative is part of efforts by the Ministry of Education and Sports, in partnership with River Flow International and other education stakeholders, to promote practical teaching and learning in primary schools through the provision of appropriate science teaching and learning materials.

The 20 benefits of science kits will use the science kits to support classroom demonstrations, experiments and practical lessons, enabling learners to move beyond theoretical explanations and gain a more hands-on understanding of science.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, local government officials welcomed the intervention, noting that access to appropriate science equipment is essential in helping teachers make science lessons more interactive, practical and learner centered.

The leadership of Nansana Municipality expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education and Sports for selecting the municipality among the first beneficiaries of the science kits.

The intervention also aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of Uganda’s Competence-Based Curriculum, which places greater emphasis on learner participation, practical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving and the application of knowledge.

River Flow International has been supporting practical science education in Uganda through the promotion of primary science kits, teacher capacity building and other initiatives aimed at improving the quality of science teaching and learning.

The organisation has worked with education stakeholders to support schools with practical teaching materials while also encouraging teachers to effectively integrate the kits into their classroom practice.

With the arrival of the science kits, the 20 beneficiary schools in Nansana Municipality are expected to make greater use of practical approaches during science lessons. School leaders and teachers will play a critical role in ensuring that the materials are properly maintained and consistently used to benefit learners.

Education stakeholders further called for continued collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Sports, local governments, development partners, school administrators and teachers to ensure that more schools across the country have access to practical science learning materials.

The distribution in Nansana Municipality therefore represents more than the handover of equipment; it is an investment in creating learning environments where children can explore, experiment and develop a stronger understanding of science.

As the 20 schools begin using the kits, stakeholders hope the initiative will increase learners’ interest and participation in science while supporting teachers to deliver more effective and practical lessons.

The Nansana Municipality leadership has welcomed the intervention and reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Ministry of Education and Sports and its partners to strengthen education services and improve learning outcomes for children in the municipality.

The distribution marks an important milestone in the municipality’s efforts to promote practical science education and ensure that learners have the tools they need to learn science by doing, exploring and discovering.
