Ibanda, Uganda — A new chapter in science education is unfolding in Ibanda Municipality as schools receive primary science kits aimed at transforming classroom learning from theory-based instruction to hands-on experience.

For years, many primary schools in the area have struggled to effectively teach science due to a lack of practical equipment. Lessons that required demonstrations were often reduced to chalkboard illustrations and verbal explanations, leaving learners with limited understanding of key scientific concepts. However, the introduction of science kits is set to change that narrative.

“These kits will help learners understand scientific concepts better through practical demonstrations, which will ultimately improve their performance,” said a head teacher at one of the beneficiary schools. “For a long time, we have been teaching science largely through theory because we lacked the necessary equipment.”

The kits, which include essential tools for experiments and demonstrations, are expected to make science lessons more interactive and engaging. Learners can now observe, test, and explore scientific ideas firsthand , a shift that education stakeholders say is critical in building curiosity and deeper understanding.

The Deputy Mayor of Ibanda Municipality, Fred Manywana, welcomed the initiative and commended the Ministry of Education and Sports for prioritizing science education.

“This is a commendable investment in the future of our children,” Manywana said. “Practical learning makes science more interesting and easier to understand. We appeal to the government to extend this programme so that more schools can benefit from these science kits.”

Education leaders believe that early exposure to practical science not only improves academic performance but also inspires learners to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

However, alongside the excitement, leaders have emphasized the importance of proper use and maintenance of the equipment. Assistant Resident District Commissioner Guma Godfrey Godwin urged teachers and school administrators to take full responsibility for the kits.

“We must ensure that these materials are well protected and used for their intended purpose,” he said. “This investment should benefit not only the current learners but also future generations.”

As classrooms begin to embrace this hands-on approach, there is growing optimism that Ibanda’s schools will witness improved learner participation, better comprehension of scientific concepts, and stronger academic outcomes.

The science kits mark more than just a supply of equipment , they represent a shift towards a more practical, engaging, and effective education system that equips learners with skills for the future.
