This project aims at promoting practical teaching of science subjects. RIFI-STI develops reading, teaching, and learning materials designed by experienced teachers and consultants in the form of Teacher’s Guides and Pupil’s Books as per the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) guidelines. Our teaching and learning materials are activity-based, learner-centered, and relate to the daily life experiences of the learners to easily grasp and understand concepts. The learner-centered approach aims at developing learner autonomy and independence with a major focus on skills development and practice that enables lifelong learning and independent problem-solving. The materials are approved by NCDC and recommended by the Ministry of Education and Sports as well as the Directorate of Education Standards.
Promoting a Practical Approach to Science(PPAS)
Primary Integrated Science-New Approach
Primary Integrated Science: THE NEW APPROACH pupil’s books and teachers’ guides are based on the classroom experience that is adapted to the social and cultural context of the Ugandan society while meeting the needs of the education system.
The goal of the project is to improve the quality of teaching applicable and practical science right from the primary level of education and to set a foundation for science education in higher levels of education (Post-primary Education).
Why are these books unique?
The books are localized in that learners can easily relate the information to their local setting which makes learning easy.
The books are activity-based allowing pupils to innovate, apply classroom concepts in day-to-day life, and experience the real-life importance of science.
They give basic and applicable life-skills to pupils that are useful in everyday life.
They encourage innovation for self-employment and starting small self-help projects
The explanations are easy to understand and stimulate pupils’ interest
Activities are accompanied by illustrations and real-life photos to enhance pupil’s learning experience.
The learning activities in these books form a strong foundation for learning science at higher levels of education
Other running projects
RIFI through the PPAS project produces science instructional materials. For these materials to be efficiently and effectively used, RIFI-STI trains science teachers on how best they can use them to conduct practical and learner-centered lessons.
Science Readers are unique storybooks based on the primary science curriculum from P.1-P.7. They are prepared to help and encourage pupils to develop the skill and love for reading. As they master the basics of literacy, they acquire knowledge on how to handle day-to-day challenges.
To further demonstrate the importance of science, RIFI has formed a partnership with schools to set up science projects. These projects enable learners to apply classroom knowledge and acquire skills that will help them in their daily life at home, school, and after they finish or leave
